WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, poisonous gas that can be produced by faulty appliances or incorrect ventilation. Provided an appliance is correctly installed and adjusted and regularly serviced, the risk from CO is minimal.

However you should always ensure that adequate ventilation is maintained and be aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning – headaches, nausea, dizziness and tiredness.

For added peace of mind you could consider a carbon monoxide detector. These are inexpensive and are available from DIY stores. If you have any doubts about the safety of a gas appliance – do not use it – call us or any Gas Safe registered engineer and have it checked.

WHAT IS THE GAS SAFE REGISTER AND DOES MY PLUMBER HAVE TO BE REGISTERED?
Gas Safe Register is the only official list of gas engineers legally able to perform gas work on boilers, hobs, ovens, fires and all other gas appliances.

LW Haddow Plumbing & Heating Limited are listed in the Gas Safe Register. Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in GB on 1st April 2009.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SERVICE MY BOILER?
It is prudent, for safety and efficiency, to have the boiler serviced annually. You should call us or any Gas Safe registered installer to service the boiler and to check its emissions.

DO I NEED A LANDLORDS GAS SAFETY CERTIFICATE?
If you rent out property as a landlord, then you are responsible for ensuring that all gas fittings and flues are maintained in good order, and that gas appliances and flues are checked for safety every 12 months. You must keep a record of all safety checks for at least two years and issue it to existing tenants and to any new tenants before they move in.

Tenants are responsible for the maintenance and safety of appliances they own.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF A WATER PIPE BURSTS?
Shut off the water at the stopcock and open all taps to drain the system quickly. Isolate the power supply to immersion heaters, showers, heating system etc. so there is no further damage to the system. Call us to arrange for the pipe to be repaired.

Remember – we have an emergency call out service.

HOW DO I FIND THE WATER STOPCOCK FOR MY PROPERTY?
It is usually found on an internal wall, often under the kitchen sink. However, some properties, typically conversions to multiple occupation, do not seem to have one!

If you cannot find an internal stopcock, an external stopcock can usually be found under a small square iron or plastic cover in the pavement outside your house. The external stopcock can be turned on or off with a special turnkey.
